Neil

Gallaiford CEO

Passionate fundraiser and insightful leader by day; wine connoisseur and foodie by night. That’s Neil in a nutshell.

In addition to his many management duties as ST’s CEO, Neil provides clients with crucial strategic input and helps them develop new product initiatives.

Prior to joining ST in 2006, he had his own database analytics and strategic marketing consultancy which advised a range of national and international clients on how to understand their donor data and develop marketing strategies based on that understanding. Other highlights of Neil’s 30-year marketing career include: national director of donor-based campaigns for the MS Society of Canada; founder of Cornerstone Fundraising Services, the leading fundraising database management and donation-processing firm in Canada; and founding chair of the CMA’s Not-For-Profit Council.

Neil also collects art and is a proud volunteer with the Art Gallery of Ontario. When he travels, he seeks out art galleries, and art gallery cafes, which he says are almost always excellent.

Paula

A professional fundraiser working with non-profit clients for over 20 years, Paula is committed to providing flawless program management and thoughtful strategic counsel. From developing fundraising and marketing strategies to offering insight and clarity around integrated multi-channel plans, Paula is, and always will be, results-oriented. Over the years she has worked closely with many non-profit organizations including the Canadian Cancer Society, Susan G. Komen and Amnesty International.

Paula is also a long-time volunteer for the Association of Fundraising Professionals (AFP) Greater Toronto Chapter and has chaired the AFP Toronto Congress. She is serving on the Chapter Board of Directors as Vice President Marketing and Communications.

At the national level, Paula is currently Secretary and Treasurer on the inaugural AFP Canada Board.

Paula is also passionate about leading a healthy lifestyle, both in mind and body, and loves yoga, spinning and practising mindfulness. She finds healthy living a great way to complement a busy day at the office. When not engaging with our clients, or serving as a volunteer, Paula enjoys spending time with her family, including her two amazing teenagers.

Bryan

Tenenhouse EVP and Chief Creative Officer

Bryan loves dogs. And people. Especially people who love dogs. In the rare moments when he’s not hard at work directing the creative at ST or providing strategic counsel to our clients, Bryan can be found walking his beloved golden retrievers Piper and Bennett (named after Tony Bennett) along the shores of Lake Ontario.

Bryan honed his creative and strategic skills at major Canadian agencies including Wunderman/Y&R, Vickers & Benson, BBDO and Ogilvy before coming to ST. As a respected writer and creative director, he wanted to use his years of experience, strategic acumen, and creative ingenuity to help make the world a better place.

Not one to sit on the sidelines, Bryan has served on the board of directors of the Canadian Marketing Association, was founding chair of the CMA's Direct Marketing Council and founding jurist for the National Advertising Awards. He is a sought-after speaker who has addressed audiences at AFP Congress Toronto, CMA National Conference and many others. His articles have appeared in the Globe & Mail as well as various national advertising and marketing trade publications.

Kathleen

Grace Director, Digital Strategy

ST is committed to sharing our expertise with clients so they thrive in the ever-changing digital environment.”
Kathleen loves to be outside. Whether training for a half-marathon or exploring the city with her husband and their adorable Cavalier King Charles Spaniel Murphy, Kathleen is always up for an adventure. It’s definitely in her nature to try new things – whether that’s joining a soccer league without ever having kicked a soccer ball or deciding to sign up for a triathlon and then being forced to learn to ride a bike.

That stick-to-itiveness carries over into Kathleen’s professional life; she’s led digital campaigns for a wide variety of organizations from conception to execution. With years of experience in corporate, non-profit and agency environments, she’s gained a unique perspective on how clients can leverage both traditional media and digital platforms to reach and engage their donors.

Most recently, Kathleen was Marketing & Communications Manager at CanadaHelps, assisting Canadian charities reach their goals by providing online donation and fundraising tools. Previously, she was a Digital Account & Project Manager with Community Agency in Toronto.

Jennifer

Meriano Director, Brand and Integrated Marketing

"A brand is a powerful expression of what charities aspire to be on their best day. The mission is important but building a powerful brand is what facilitates the mission and makes it achievable."
Whether sharing the tale of how she learned to eat fire from a New Zealand street performer or watching a documentary about how bubble wrap was invented, Jennifer loves a good story. It’s little wonder then, that a big focus of her role at Stephen Thomas Ltd is helping clients tell their stories.

A strategic, multidisciplinary brand director, Jennifer specializes in working with non-profit marketers who are looking to address brand and integrated marketing challenges within their organizations.

Jennifer joined ST from the commercial marketing side of the business. Most recently she was the Creative Account Director at Toronto-based The Mint Agency, where she helped steer cross-functional teams in the development and execution of a full-spectrum of integrated marketing campaigns covering web, print, direct and social channels. Previously, she held marketing management roles at AOL Media Network and Softchoice Corporation.

Donna

Richardson Director, Fundraising Solutions

"Listening is the secret to our success, really listening to what our clients and potential clients need. They are the ones that make things happen; we’re only there to help them succeed."
Donna is a pioneer. Literally. She makes her own bread and cheese, cans food for the winter and has even raised ducks so she can collect fresh eggs. If not for the lack of central heating and her cherished blow dryer she would love to live off the land.

She is also a pioneer when it comes to fundraising solutions. Having worked directly for non-profit organizations as well as on the agency side, Donna has an in-depth understanding of the motivations that inspire Canadians to volunteer and donate.

Donna began her fundraising career at Stephen Thomas Ltd back in 1990 and spent much of her career here providing strategy and project management for a variety of not-for-profit clients. She went on to work in development roles with several charities including Sinai Health Foundation, Branksome Hall and Variety Village, where she worked for 10 years with committees, boards and staff to grow revenue through major and planned giving and events. She rejoined ST in 2015, where she is now putting her knowledge, expertise and pioneering spirit to work to help our clients achieve ever greater fundraising success.

Liz

Attfield Senior Account Director

Liz has three great loves – family, work, and music. Etched onto the back of her iPhone are the words: Music gives soul to the universe. And Liz feeds her soul every chance she gets – attending concerts (she saw the Tragically Hip twice in two days!) and singing karaoke. Her go-to song, Queen’s “Under Pressure”, is a testament to her resilience, and bravado!

Prior to joining ST in 2001, Liz spent three years in London working as an Account Manager at LION alongside some of UK’s top fundraisers. She also advanced her credentials by obtaining a diploma in direct marketing through one of the UK’s leading marketing organizations, the Institute of Direct Marketing. In addition to gaining valuable experience working with high-profile European charitable organizations, her London location was a great base from which to travel – one of Liz’s many passions. (That’s four if you’re counting!)

An important member of ST’s leadership team, Liz is our clients’ go-to person for guidance and advice on the wide spectrum of services ST offers, including fully integrated campaigns and database analytics. As a Senior Account Director, Liz’s current clients include the Canadian Cancer Society of Ontario and ALS Canada.

Julie

Gales Senior Account Director

Since becoming a mom, Julie’s traded in hot yoga and meditation for watching Treehouse TV, singing kids’ songs and playing at her neighbourhood park with her two young children.

Julie’s passion for the not-for-profit sector was sparked in university where she worked on several charitable campaigns and special events. After earning her Bachelor of Arts Degree in psychology from Wilfrid Laurier University, Julie was determined to parlay her fundraising expertise into a full-time career. That decision led her to join ST in 2004. With her smarts, determination and can-do attitude, Julie quickly moved up the ranks and today she is a key member of the ST management team.

In her current role as a Senior Account Director, Julie uses her expertise to develop and guide profitable fundraising campaigns that help raise millions of dollars for clients such as Médecins Sans Frontières/Doctors Without Borders (MSF), the Children’s Wish Foundation of Canada and the University of Toronto. Julie also manages the HR portfolio at ST, drawing on her considerable energy to work closely with staff and make a positive contribution to our organization’s culture.

Jennifer

Bely Senior Account Director

“I’ve dedicated my entire career to the not-for-profit sector. It’s incredibly satisfying to go to work every day and be inspired by my clients.”
Jennifer loves spending time with her husband and kids, hiking along nature trails or just playing a game of tag at their local park. She’s also an avid gardener and is always looking to find time to enjoy a good book.
Jen has more than 20 years’ experience working in the non-profit fundraising sector in the U.S. and Canada, leading several national multi-channel fundraising programs.

At Stephen Thomas Ltd, Jen wears two hats. As Account Director, Jen provides strategic planning, budgeting, modeling and analysis to clients including Canadian Cancer Society, Children’s Wish Foundation, Cystic Fibrosis Canada and Crohn’s and Colitis Canada. With her other hat on, Jen shares her passion for data, overseeing the ST data analytics department.

Steve

Thomas Chairman & Executive Creative Director

"When I started the agency in 1980, I couldn’t have imagined what ST has grown into…the breadth of services, the level of expertise and the continued passion of multiple generations of staff, all working to make the world a better place. I’m intensely proud of what we’ve become."
For 25 years Steve has been a volunteer boys’ basketball coach at local high schools. Last year he took his Greenwood Grizzlies to the Finals. It’s a very different world from fundraising and that’s why it’s his perfect hobby.

Often described as the “Guru” of Canadian direct response fundraising, Steve continues to play an active role at ST. He will gladly lend you his accumulated wisdom and experience, and be available to you as necessary, particularly during the initial strategic-planning stages.

A fundraiser for over 40 years, Steve founded Stephen Thomas Associates
(now Stephen Thomas Ltd or ST) in 1980. It was Canada’s first direct response fundraising agency working exclusively in the non-profit sector. His contribution to the sector has been recognized through many awards including Directors’ Choice Lifetime Achievement Award (Canadian Direct Marketing Association), Outstanding Fundraising Executive Award (AFP Greater Toronto Chapter) and an award from Amnesty International for 25 years of service.
